Rain at Machu Picchu

At the bus station the other day we heard about the death of an Argentine tourist and guide at Machu Picchu. Today I had a chance to look it up and found out about the rains which have affected thousands (locals and tourists), blocked the railroad,  and damaged the site.  Unfortunately, the few articles I [...]

Nazca, cont.

For ages I have been trying to upload this video of our Nazca flight.  I finally found an Interent cafe where the upload time was reasonable.

Puno

Saturday, November 14, 2009
We arrived in Puno from Arequipa on Saturday afternoon.  Puno is a port city situated on Lake Titicaca, the (contested) highest navigable lake in the world.  I had originally wanted to cross into Bolivia on the less traveled northern shore of Lake Titicaca.  However, we soon discovered that Copacabana is, in actuality, [...]

Food Diary: Peru

p>In Peru we ate lots of “pollo a la brassa” (rotisserie chicken). We discovered “ceviche” (marinated raw seafood). And Marc tried “cuy” (guinea pig), alpaca, and ostrich. Of course, we also tried a few “pisco sours”.

El Misti

Thursday, November 12, 2009
El Misti is a dormant volcano (5825 m) near Arequipa popular for climbing due to its lack of technical complexity. It is one of three near the city, the other two being Pichu Pichu (~5600 m) and Chachani (6000+ m). For the El Misti trek I went with my big pack but [...]

Food Diary: Arequipa

In Arequipa we cooked a lot to save money. On our wedding anniversary we splurged at the restaurant Zig Zag. We frequented the Capriccio cafe for its great coffee and delicious cakes. We discovered cheap chifa (fried rice), pollo a la brassa (roast chicken), and salchipapa (hot dogs and french fries).

Post-ocity!

And… we are finally updated. All the new posts (anything after Lima) are backdated so you may have to dig a bit to find them. If you haven’t been getting e-mail updates, we think it’s because the subscribe2 blog plug-in doesn’t trigger on backdated posts, hence this post. In addition, Marc updated [...]

Colca Canyon

Before leaving the Arequipa area, there were two more things we wanted to see/do – a Colca Canyon trek and a hike up to the summit of El Misti volcano (5822 m). Last Thursday we priced a trip for Misti and determined that we could go to Colca Canyon “solo” (i.e., without a guide) [...]

We Love Arequipa

Hey, Arequipa Board of Tourism – We love your city.  It could be that we were so enamored because we were due for a break from traveling, but we prefer to believe that it is just a great place.  Regardless, it was a match.  The city – nicknamed The White City due to [...]

Arequipa: Pit Stop

We are now on a vacation from our vacation. At this point, we are sick of spending nights on buses rushing to the next touristy destination. We are one week into a two-week hiatus from traveling; we’ve settled into a comfy kitchen-equipped hostal in Arequipa and enrolled in 20 hours of weekly instruction [...]
